This is the most important question Christians can ask, because their eternal soul may depend on it!
The greatest deception which has been devised by Satan that has been accepted by a large number of Christians is the false doctrine of "once saved, always saved." This doctrinal theory assumes once a person is saved that there is nothing he or she could ever do to lose his or her salvation. Even if he should become fruitless and commit the grosses sins, this creed teaches that he is still saved. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The reason so many American Christians believe this lie is because of the undo influence John Calvan had over European Christianity. (And, of course, Europe influenced America.) Calvin was the first to popularize the concept that all Christians will persevere to the end.
Although God definitely promises to do his part to keep us saved to the end, this does not mean that we do not have a part to play. God promises eternal security, but not unconditional eternal security. Nearly all God's promises are conditional; that is, they are dependent in part on us for their fulfillment.

I just finished perhaps the best book I have ever read on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The title: "Are We Baptized With The Holy Spirit When Converted?" by W. H. Turner. Copyright 1947. It appears W.H. Turner was a missionary in China with the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Probably safe to say this book is out of print. It came into my possession via my wife's grandmother who was a longtime Pentecostal. When she went to be with the Lord, my wife and I obtained several of her old books, and this was among them.
In the coming weeks I will work on typing this small book into a series of articles that I will post in the apologetics section of this site under "Holy Spirit Baptism". Please check back |

Enduring to the End
In the world of competitive sports, many very good and promising athletes will compete for a title and even dream of obtaining the prize. However, relatively few will pay the price of the intense physical training and years of preparation that must take place prior to the competition. Even of those who try, many fall out of the race somewhere along the way.
The New Testament draws a parallel from this metaphor, as to the endurance required of believers. (Mat 13:18-23) If we would partake of the Prize set before us, we must remember the words of Jesus: "He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved." (Mat 24:13; 10:22; Mark 13:13)

Understanding Spiritual Gifts
The ministry of Spiritual Gifts originates in the New Testament, commissioned by our Lord Jesus Christ. After He established His church on the earth and ascended to Heaven, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to equip His church with power and spiritual gifts (Greek -- charismata) so that His disciples could continue to carry out His ministry objectives. While there are certain gifts of a spectacular nature that are often given greater attention, the New Testament mentions at least 21 that are provided to the church. These gifts are listed in Eph. 4:11, Rom. 12:3-7, and 1 Cor. 12:1-12,28, and are generally assigned to one of three categories, as listed below:
- Ministry (office) gifts: Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher.
- Motivational (practical) gifts: Service, Exhortation, Giving, Leadership, Mercy, Helps and Administration.
- Charismatic (spiritual) gifts: Wisdom, Knowledge, Discernment, Prophecy, Tongues, Interpretation, Faith, Healing and Miracles.
Most churches and denominations accept some variation of the "motivational " and "ministry" gifts (perhaps with controversy over the office of apostle and prophet). However others completely reject the modern day operation of the 9 charismatic gifts listed in 1 Cor. 12:1-12. In brief, their view is taken from an interpretation of 1 Cor. 13:8-10, claiming that such spectacular gifts were only intended as a short-lived, supernatural lift to help the early church get started -- that they vanished after the last Apostles of Jesus died, when the scriptures took their place.

"Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:" - 1 Peter 4:12 You may be going through a fiery trial right now. You may have been faced with a fiery trial in the past and failed miserably. What you are facing is not uncommon and unique to you. Take heart in the fact that many have gone through exactly what you are going through, and have come out winners. If you are faced with a trial or temptation and you miss the mark, don't despair. Get up, dust yourself off, repent and with extreme and overwhelming joy - move on. Strengthen yourself in preparation for the next fiery trial. Next time, you will succeed. Never, ever give up. If you fail, make the dogged determination that you will not fail next time. Spend time in the Word and on your face before God in sincere repentance. Ask God to show you how to make it through the next time you are faced with a trial or temptation.

Reading in 2 Corinthians this morning. Paul is warning the Corinthian believers about those who call themselves Christians but are really unbelievers disguised as "angels of light". Then he takes the Corinthian believers to the wood shed because they have "welcomed" (false Christians) them into their fellowship even though they taught a "different gospel" from the one that Paul preached. As I thought on this it suddenly dawned on me that perhaps - just perhaps - we too readily accept and embrace those who "call" themselves Christians, but inwardly they don't have a clue about the New Birth experience. I'm not saying that we should shun anyone. But for someone to approach you with a smile, shake your hand and say, "Hi, I'm a Christian" . . well, sorry - Paul is saying that is just not enough. I think God wants us to "probe". Ask the questions that would led you to believe they are what they say they are. You can do this in love, and in most cases, they won't even realize that you are verifying their Christianity. You have to ask the right questions and do it over time.

Is Your Eternity Predetermined?
The Greek word for predestinate is "proorizo", which means to "determine before"; ordain; predestinate. So what about those scriptures that mention predestination? Do they prove that your eternity is determined by God and there is nothing you can do to change it?
That line of reasoning goes contrary to the entire Word of God and is completely out of bounds with the very nature of the God of Abraham that we read about in the Bible. People who believe this may be sincere - but they are sincerely wrong.
It is God's PLAN - the plan of salvation - that He has foreknown and predestinated, and NOT the individual conformity of free will to the plan.
Does God predestinate, or determine beforehand who will and will not go to heaven? Predestination is certainly found in the Bible:

"What are you doing with The Gift? You say you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and Fire - where is the proof? The Holy Spirit Baptism was given so you would have power to do the works of Jesus.
John 14:12-14:
12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
13And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
Mark 16: 15-20:
15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
